March TIF

I finally got March's challenge finished. The fabrics used in this piece is cottons, silk diponi, brocade(I believe that is what it is).
Threads used were Rajmahal silk, Jewel Effects E334, Dmc Floss, Dmc Rayon Perle 5, Sassa Lynne Perle Fine,Anchor Marlin,KNK Silk,TYI Silk.
I am really pleased with this block. The peacock motif, and all the seam treatments came out of Carole Samples Treasury of Crazy Quilt Stitches. This book is definately a treasure to have in your library. The peacock was done using the split stitch for the body, beak and the black, white, and aqua green of the feathers, and then stem stitch for the rest of the feathers.I am making all my blocks on point, can't wait to have enough to make a quilt top with.

January Take It Further Challenge

I finally got my January TIF challenge block completed. For the fabrics I used 100% cottons, silk dipioni, and silk. The threads I used are DMC Floss, DMC Rayon, DMC Jewel Effects E334 and E155, Sassa Lynne Perle Fine, and Sulky Metallic.
This was fun and I am hoping to do a block a month using the color scheme Sharon gives to us each month. Here is February's color scheme.

Now it's time to get busy and find these colors. (g)

Take It Further Challenge

Well, now that I get the color scheme beside my block I seem to notice I picked the wrong colors, the light blue showing in my block was suppose to be the second color from the left of the color scheme. I guess the night I picked my fabrics I must have been to tired to tell the difference. The camera turned the blue violet color(the first in the color scheme) to look like a blue. Believe me you can see the violet color in it in person. And the last color on the color scheme, I didn't have that color so I used a white. So this is my finished block for the first challenge Sharon gave us. Now to find the threads and goodies to embelish it, maybe I will have better selection of getting the colors right with the embellishing.
I also wanted to share with you of why the silky was appliqued onto the green. I bought Carolyn Cibic of Evening Star Designs book of learning to cq with silkies. This silky was given to me from a friend and I wanted to use it on this challenge block, so I just appliqued it to the green fabric and then used Carolyns template to cut it to the size I needed.

Also I had read on either Pat Winters blog or Allie Aller's blog that to prevent your silky from sagging to cut out a piece of batting and put under the silky. So that's what I did, as you can see below, I cut the batting smaller than the silky then appliqued it down.

Take It Further Challenge

This challenge grew out of the Take a stitch Tuesday challenge run in 2007. “Take it Further ” aims to apply textile technique skills to design. The challenge will run all year in 2008.On the 1st of each month Sharon will post key concept and the challenge will be to take the idea, develop it and push it towards a resolved design during the month. In other words you interpret the idea and apply it to fiber.
For those that don’t like themes Sharon will post a colour scheme or a design element like a shape, to develop into a resolved design. This means every month there will be two options. If you don’t like the concept you can work the colour scheme or if you don’t like the colour scheme you can work with the concept. Or you can work with both.
The actual thing you design can be any thing you like in any medium or format you choose. It can be a crazy quilt block, a postcard, a journal quilt, a piece of embroidery, a sampler, a fabric book page or whatever sparks your imagination. It can also be visual journal work. In other words pages spreads of designs worked in a visual journal will be seen as a valid entry and included as one of the formats acceptable for the challenge.
Anyone interested in this challenge, just click on the link to the left entitled Take it Further Challenge,,click on Sharon's name and she will tell you all about it. I believe I am going to try the colour scheme one. Have fun!
